Five ‘Cop City’ protesters arrested after chaining themselves to construction equipment
Five [.fow1-1]protesters[.fow1-1] were arrested on Sept. 7, at the future site of Atlanta’s police training center after [.fow1-2]chaining[.fow1-2] themselves to construction equipment.
According to the Atlanta Police Department report, officers working at the property discovered the [.fow1-1]protesters[.fow1-1] around 9:30 a.m. The city-owned property is located off Constitution Road in DeKalb County.
The five people were arrested, and APD says it is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation regarding charges on these individuals. APD shared a photo of the individuals but did not name them.
Around this same time, approximately 25 people got together outside the site to protest, according to the police report.
Leaders of the Vote to Stop Cop City organization shared a message as the protest was happening, stating that the [.fow1-1]protesters[.fow1-1] were delivering “The People’s Stop Work Order.” The organization is collecting signatures so Atlanta residents can vote on the future of the training center, which has been named “Cop City” by its [.fow2-1]opponents[.fow2-1].
“The construction of this project and [the removal] of the South River Forest have continued despite over 100,000 Atlanta residents... calling for a [vote] on the issue,” the group said. “The City of Atlanta has fought [against] the [vote the whole time].
The organization described the arrested [.fow1-1]protesters[.fow1-1] as “two [.fow3-1]ministers[.fow3-1] and other [religious people].”
The new arrests come just days after Georgia Attorney General Christopher Carr announced charges against 61 [.fow1-1]protestors[.fow1-1] on RICO and other money-related charges. Several were charged with domestic [.fow3-2]terrorism.[.fow3-2]
